Confidence can easily be masked by someone's massive ego in pretty much any situation. Ethnicity, gender, seniority, whatever. Sometimes when someone criticizes you for something you naturally just are, it cuts deeper than most other jokes.
I recently was called a 'typical american' simply because the flavor of my yogurt was vanilla instead of plain by someone that isn't only NOT American, they're an illegal immigrant. (this post is about people running their mouths, not about my standpoint on illegal immigrants, that's a whole other story that I don't have near enough time for). First of all, I thought vanilla is plain. Not in the literal sense of the flavor, but in the general sense that it's boring as hell, yet delicious.
Knowing my coworkers ridiculing personality (yes, coworker), I was ready for her to critique my breakfast choice for that morning. I figured she'd cut me down for eating vanilla yogurt and not eating something like kale and whole wheat tortilla with a poached egg. Although I love those things, shut your fucking mouth.
Yeah, you go do that. And I'll sit here eating my vanilla yogurt with chocolate chips and have a party in my mouth. As a blonde skinny white girl, I feel like I have it really great. That doesn't give me an excuse to be ignorant to others though, so I do take into consideration other lifestyles. NOT saying that blonde is a lifestyle, I don't condone any of that.. But when people don't give me the same amount of respect I initially give them, I kind of take it personally. But in the end all we can do is laugh it off, because I'll be here all day bitching and moaning if I consume myself being worried about people's opinions."Typical Americans, nothing can ever be plain with you. Thats why you are so fat. In my country, we ate plain yogurt on everything, even some pasta dishes, oh they're so good. Maybe I should cook that tonight.."
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't understand what about someone makes them think they're above another. I also don't understand how someone from another country would work so hard to get here and make a living and NOT be a legal citizen is going to complain about her new home. Beats me!
